Joan Lowery Nixon's Orphan Train Adventures
I remember reading...the first one, I think, and liking it--IIRC, the eldest sibling disguising herself as a boy to stay close to the youngest was a plot point? Also, the Underground Railroad was involved somehow, too? *suddenly wants to go find book once again*

Yes, that's the first book. The others are less cliched. The Kelly siblings are great; I love them all.
